U.S. To Distribute Secret Transmitters Behind The Iron Curtain
WASHINGTON, Aug. 30 (Recd. 6 pm).—The State Department revealed today that it is planning to counteract Russian propaganda by secretly distributing 20,000 medium wave short wave radio receivers through the world's "critical" areas, including countries behind the iron curtain. Officials said the receivers, which they hoped could he produced for 15 dollars each, would be sent to “key persons” who would disseminate information based on the Voice of America programmes. The House of Representatives already has passed an Appropriations Bill allotting 2,860,000 dollars to distribute the receivers. Officials estimated that 50,000 receivers would be sent to eastern European countries. The means o£ distributing the sets was kept secret.
