CITY RATE DEMANDS POSTED THIS WEEK TOTAL £182,827.

Rate demands lot the current financial year were posted by the Wanganui City Council this week, the number of assessments being just over 6000. They are expected to produce a total of £182,827, compared with £171,598 for the financial year ended March 81 last. September 28 has been fixed as the last discount day. City and harbour rates and the hospital levy all show an increase this year, the total rate being 2s 3d in the £, as against 2s 1 5-8 d last year. The 15s levy on refuse collection added to each demand last year has been eliminated, however. The city rate, which includes hospital and fire levies, is 22.345 d, as against 21.135d’ last year, exclusive of the 15s refuse collection levy. The Harbour Board rate this year is 4.655 d as against 4.490 d. While the total amount to be collected by the City Council is £182,287, only a portion of this goes to city services. The Harbour Board rate, which Is separate, absorbs £29,500 trom the city alone. The balance, £153,327, is split between the Hospital and Fire Boards and the City Council in the following proportion: Hospital Board, £19,717; Fire Board, £7350; City Council, £126,250.

Of last year’s total of £177,598, the Harbour rate absorbed £28,000. leaving a balance of £149,598. Of this, the Hospital Board levy took £19,089 and the Fire Board levy £8350, leaving £122,159 for city works, etc.

Though the hospital levy is pegged at .5d in the £, increases in city valuations were responsible for the levy increasing, from £19,089 to £19,717. Legally, the rates are payable on demand within 14 days, but a discount period of 30 days is allowed from the time the demands were posted. This expires on September 28 and all rates paid by then receive a rebate of 4d ,n the £.

Last year 66 per cent of the city rates were paid by the last discount day.
