WANGANUI REFEREE FOR NEXT RANFURLY SHIELD GAME AT CHRISTCHURCH
It was reported yesterday by the chairman of the management committee of the Wanganui Rugby Union (Mr. J. Moye) that the New Zealand Rugby Union had confirmed the appointment of Mr. W. B. Broadhead, of Wanganui, as referee of the Ranfurly Shield match, Canterbury (holders) versus Wairarapa (challengers), to be played on September 2 at Christchurch. This is likely to be the first shield match Canterbury, the new holders, will play since they lifted the trophy from Otago last Wednesday. Mr. Broadhead was to have been the referee for the match Wairarapa v. Otago next Wednesday but now that is no longer a shield match, Mr. Broadhead has been automatically transferred to the game on Lancaster Park instead of Carisbrook.
This match will be the first played for the shield at Lancaster Park since 1935, when Otago lifted it from Canterbury and it has remained in the hands of either Southland or Otago, in the lands of oysters and whiskey, ever since. Canterbury’s fixtures for the remainder of this season are:— Today—v. South Canterbury, at Timaru. September 2: v. Wairarapa, at Christchurch. September 9: v. South Canterbury, at Christchurch. September 16: v. West Coast, at Christchurch. September 23: v. Wellington, at Wellington. Otago's remaining fixtures are: Today: v. Southland, at Invercargill; August 23, v. Wairarapa, at Dunedin; August 26, v. Wellington, at Dunedin; September 2, v. Taranaki, at Dunedin; September 6, v. South Canterbury, at Dunedin; September 16, v. South Canterbury, at Timaru; September 30, v. North Auckland, at Dunedin.
