Southland Surplus Potatoes Still In Ground

INVERCARGILL. Last Night (PA) —Though some potatoes are being loaded for shipping from the Bluff to the North Island, a surplus of the Arran variety is still lying in the ground and in sheds on Southland farms. In spite of this surplus there is an unsatisfied demand for King Edward potatoes, both at Invercargill and Dunedin. Though the acreage was lower at Tuatapere this year, this was more than compensated by the size of this year's crop. Many King Edwards are grown but a big proportion Is used for selling as seed. Southland growers will not derive any direct benefit from the possible success of negotiations now in train with Australia. The potatoes involved were mainly 7000 to 8000 tons from Timaru.
