DEMANDS OF KOREAN WAR DELAY PANAMERICAN SERVICES
AUCKLAND, Last Night (PA)— Pan-American Airways has experienced the longest delay for some years in its bi-weekly passenger service from Honolulu to Auckland as a result of the Korean war. The clipper which was due to arrive at Whenuapaid today is a full 24 hours behind schedule.
In addition to its commercial services Pan-American Airways is now running an air lift transporting men and supplies to Korea for the American armed forces under charter to the American Government. For this reason all crews are now fully engaged and there are no spare men available. The clippers change crews at. Honolulu and the delayed plane had to wait until a crew that was to bring it on to Nandi, Fiji, had enjoyed the rest period laid down under the flying regulations. There are normally about five crews on call in Honolulu but in the present circumstances there was only one crew available. These men were late arriving, but still had to have their rest.
Surplus planes from other air lines are being used to supplement PanAmerican aircraft in the air lift. These include six D.C.4's from PanAmerican’s South American Division. Pan-American Airways are using the same crews for both commercial and military operations and have recalled 144 additional pilots to active duty. So far, no commercial services have had to be cancelled.
