Death Of Prominent Hawke’s Bay Owner

The death occurred at Hastings yesterday of Mr Alfred Francis Morgan Symes, aged 76, a well known farmer and prominent ir racing circles.

Born at Pa’tea, Mr Symes later farmed on his own account at Whenuakura. He was a director of lhe Palea Freezing Company and was a member of the Patea County Council for many years. He went to Hawke’s Bay in 1918 and purchased lhe Richmond ParK property at Longlands, near Hastings, and began farming on an extensive scale on this and other properties he acnulred. The best horse Mr Symes raced was La Moderne, who won the New Zealand St. Lpger Stakes in record time and from whom he bred Gay Son and Gayest Son. Palora and Coronace were other good winners purchased by Mr Symes. He imported the stallion Ginerium, who stood at Richmond Park for several years before being sold to an Australian stud.
