WANGANUI JOCKEY CLUB ANNUAL REPORT SHOWS SUCCESSFUL YEAR

A net profit of £lB9O 0s 8d after allowing for depreciation to the extent of £BBB 11s and making provision for taxation is shown in the annual report to be submitted on behalf of the committee by the president, Mr F. F t Newman, at the annual meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club, to be held on Wednesday, August 2. During the year reviewed the totalisator investments amounted to £421,243 10s, a new record for the club, as compared with £417,751 10s pu’t through for the centennial year in 1948. This was achieved in spite of bad weather* on the second day of the June meeting. Attention had been given to the ma ntenance and repairs of the club’s buildings during the year, adds the report. Some urgent repairs were carried out on the members’ stand prior to the June meeting, and the balance of this work is to be completed before the September meeting. While this was being done opportunity was taken to .make some small structural alterations which would relieve congestion on the stand and provide better facilities for viewing the races. Negotiations to acquire an adjoining piece of land at the back of the course had been successful, and this had enabled the committee to make improvements to the course proper and provide excellent start : ng positions -for races over four and a half furlongs and a mile and a-half. Reference to the installation of photo-finish equipment and also to the complimentary remarks of owners and trainers on the course proper and training tracks is also contained in the report. Further improvement has been effected in the provision of amenities in the afternoon tea rooms under the main grandstand. Appreciation of the services of Mr T. Mitchell, who is not seeking reelection as vice-president or a member of the committee, and of Mr T. Currie, who is reFnquishing office as honorary timekeeper after 34 years’ service, is expressed in the report. The nominations of Messrs A. Cameron as patron, F. F. Newman as president, A. Macnab as vice-president, S Paterson as honorary timekeeper, and R. I. Sewell as honorary treasurer provide sufficient to fill these vacancies. However, there are seven nominations for five vacancies on the committee, these being Messrs C. C. Baldwin, R. R. Dawson, I. Higgle and W R. Rollick (retiring in rotation), I. R. Billinghurst, C. D. Lynch and J. C. Small. A postal ballot is to be conducted to fill the five vacancies.
