Auckland To Meet Wanganui In Soccer Next Week As Planned
The embargo placed by the council of the New Zealand Football Association on the match between Auckland and Wanganui on Cook's Gardens on Saturday, July 29, which the Wanganui Football Association defied, had been lifted, said the secretary of the association, Mr J. D. Hicks, last night. This information had been conveyed to him by telephone and meant that the Auckland v. Wanganui match would go ahead as scheduled. Today. Technical Old Boys (Wanganui) play Ohakea (Manawatu) in the second round for the Chatham Cup. This game will he decided at Cook’s Gardens. The winners were to have met Wellington in the third round on Julv 29, but Mr. Hicks was advised yesterday that this match had now been put forward to August 5. Mr. Hicks said that he had a telephone conversation with Mr. W. B Hicks (Wellington), who is secretary of the council of the New Zealand Football Association. Mr. W B. Hicks had stated that an urgent call had been receivef from the New Zealand Rugby League in Auckland statin." that the date set for the North Island final for the Chatham Cup, which was to have been nlaved in Auckland on August I? clashed with the Rugby League test between New Zealand and the touring British Ru"by League team, also to be slaved at Auckland on that date. As both gates would suffer if thes** two matches were plaved on the same day the council of the New Zealand football Association had decided, as a way out, to put forward the North Island final of the Chatham Cup to August 19.
In view of the Wellington District Association still being in difficulties, and as it has yet to find a finalist, the council had also decided to advance the date of the third round for the Chatham Cun, jn which the winner of the Wanganui-Manawatu game today meets Wellington, to August 5, instead of July 29.
This would leftve the Wanganui representative teams free to meet the Auckland representative team at Wanganui on Julv 29, as arranged.
