WARNING LIGHTS FOR MORE RAIL CROSSINGS HAS BEEN PLANNED
NEW PLYMOUTH, Last Night (OC) —The work of equipping level crossings with flashing lights will probably bo started on the Marton-New Plymouth line vvhhin 18 months, according to Railway Department officials. The work is part of a nation-wide scheme decided on by the department in consultations with the Transport Department, the Main Highways Board, the Municipal Associat'on, the
Counties Association and the North and South Island Motor Unions. Wi‘h the o'.icct of keeping to a schedule of equipping 50 crossings a year, the department intends to concentrate the initial work on the North and South Is'and Ma n Trunk linos and on the suburban lines at Wellington and Auckland The scheme will then be reviewed before it is decided which lines to equip next, but it is corsidered likely that work on
•lih Pa'm°rston North-Napier line will be followed by work on the line from Marton to New Plymouth. This should be late in 1951 or early in 1952.
