Annual Meeting Of Marton Boy Scouts
Some 25 parents were present at I he annual general meeting of the Ist. Marton Boy Scouts Committee on Wednesday night. Prior to the business of the meeting a short concert was held, consisting mainly of short sketches.
In his welcome to the parents, the retiring chairman, Mr. H. L. Grut, apologised for the absence of the Cubmaster. Mr. F. Rubery, who was on the sick list and said that Cubmaster Rpbery ably assisted by Messrs.. Bruce Ward and Graham Jensen were doing a grand job of work with the troop. They were not only confining their activities to one night a week, but were attending training camps and meetings in an effort to improve then knowledge of Scouting. The election of officers resulted: Chairman, Mr. J. M. Grant; secretary, Mr. R. M. Palmer; treasurer, Mr. F. L. Jones; committee Messrs. H. L. Grut, S. G. Laurensen, R. A. Poppelwell, E. J. Street, C. B. Parlane, Les Jones. L. Humphrey, A. A. Watson, Rev. James Robertson and Mesdames B. McKenzie, T. C. Ward, G- Hogan, G. Cooper and A. A. Watson. Because of the unsuitable weather conditions durng the winter months, it was decided to hold the annual meeting in future, in October. The new meeting date will come into operation next year.
Mr. Grant paid a tribute to the work of Cubmaster Rubery stating that in all his experience he had never seen a leader with such control over the boys. He expressed regret that Mr Rubery was indisposed and wished him a speedy recovery. Rev. J. Robertson and Mr. E. J. Street spoke of the fine work achieved by Mr. Grut while chairman of the committee and in particular mentioned the great assistance he had been to the Scout movement in obtaining the Victory Hall.
RANGITIKEI TO ASK FOR SHARE OF RUGBY PROFITS.
It is estimated that the tour of the British Isles Rugby team through New Zealand this winter will result is £25,000 being added to the coffers of the New Zealand Rugby Union. As Press reports indicate that the New Zealand Union intends to assist financialy smaller unions from the profits from the British tour, the Rangitikei Rugby Union at its meeting on Wednesday night decided to apply to the New Zealand Rugby Union through its parent body for a financial grant.
The suggestion came from Mr. C. Dowdie who pointed out that the Wanganui Union made a profit of £9OO out of the Wanganui-British Isles match. Several Rangitikei players took part in this game, said Mr. Dowdie, and furthermore hundreds went from the Rangitikei district to see the match.
The extensive travelling problem in Rangitikei was mentioed by Mr. H. G. Stewart, who said that it was greater than that of any other sub-unions. This, he said, should be stressed in the application. The recent touring Thames Valley team which played at Marton received a grant of £2OO from the New Zealand Rugby Union towards the tour, said Mr. Pickford. Thames hao been saving up for this tour for the past 27 years. Mr. Dowdie alro pointed out that the Bush Union at present touring the East Coast had likewise been git en a grant of £2OO.

The two games set down for Marton will both be played in the morning, the main fixtures being between the two local teams, Athletic and United. In some cases new umpires have been appointed. Fixtures are:—

Senior B: Tuis (No 1) Swifts at Rangitawa, 2.15 p.m.) (Mrs P. Royal and Mr. V. Hodder); Ohakea v Tuis (No 2) at Ohakea, 2.15 p.m. (Warrant Officer W. H. Smith and Mr. C- Burkinshaw); Athletic v Huia at Marton, 10.30 a.m. (Mrs E. Tolley and Miss NHutton).

The following players from South Rangitikei schools have been selected to travel to Taihape tomorrow to play a combined northern and central Rangitikei team for the purpose of selecting the Rangitikei Rugby representatives to play at the annual tournament at Ohakune next month: - J. Tamaparae, W. Mataparae, R. Tuwha, E. Tataurangi, J. Hurunui, K. Nepia (Ratana), A. Bettridge, R. Griffin, T. Taylor, G. Gibbs, W. Gibbs, S. Cameron, D. Smith (Hunterville), A. Te Huna, W. Nairne, I. Pudney (Bulls), D. Wright (Parewanui), N. Anderson (Porewa), I. Hausman (Marton Convent), G. Hogan (Marton DHS), L. Corkran (Marton Junction). The team will travel by bus leaving Marton Victory Milk Bar at 8.30 a.m. Rata and Hunterville players will be picked up en route. HAWKESTONE GOLF CLUB.
The Hawkestone Golf Club draw for tomorrow is the same as that for last Saturday, but in conjunction with the championship matches there will be a further round for the captain’s trophy - stableford bogey competition.
