Children’s Aid Being Sought For U.N.I.C E.F.

APPEAL BY MINISTER OF EDUCATION The children of New Zealand are being asked to help the children of the world's less fortunate countries by taking an active part in the current United Nations Appeal for Children. The move has the whole-hearted support of the Minister of Education, Mr. Algie, who in a letter to all headmasters and teachers recalls the splendid response made by the children of New Zealand to the 1948 appeal. “We had all hoped, I am sure,” the Minister wrote, “that children everywhere would by now be adequately cared for, but this is far from the case. . . This time the New Zealand target is higher—£soo,ooo in two months—and an intensive effort by everybody will be necessary to raise this sum. It may give the children added interest to know that 40 countrfes in the world are joining in raising funds for the same purpose. “Most of the money raised will be used to purchase food in New Zealand, and it is also expected that wool and medical supplies will be sent. I am happy to be able to assure you that the supplies will reach the children through the organisation of UNICEF, which is now caring *or nvllions of children. The Minister suggests to the teachers that some organisation be set up in every school to enable the children to play their part in extending New Zealand help to UNICEF. The Minister of Education has agreed, to make a special broadcast to children in the schools’ broadcast session.
