WANGANUI ASTONISHED AT ITS NOVEL TABLE DISPLAY

Lords And Ladies, Figures Of Fiction And Reality Entertain For Plunket Society

It was with a feeling of astonishment and pleasure that many of the visitors to the display of decorated tables, which opened in the reception room of the. Rutland Hotel yesterday afternoon, wandered round the room where the tables were displayed. I “It is marvellous and beautiful.” i That was the general comment. That so much that was beautiful and rare could have been collected for the display made visitors wonder how much more there must be tucked away obscurely in many homes. All the tables, classical and novel, attracted considerable interest. i That the idea met with support of. the various women’s organisations, 1 societies and business firms is evident by the entries in the competition and the amount of work which the excellent exhibits have entailed. I An added interest is that the gen-1 eral public judge the tables by putting I pennies into the voting boxes, The funds thus raised are for the benefit of the Wanganui Plunket Society, which sponsored the display. Voters will have difficulty in making up their, minds as to the best exhibit, as each table, of its type, is of a very high standard. I The display was opened by Mrs D R. Jackson, of Waverley, provincial president of the Women’s Division, Federated Farmers, who was introduced by Mrs H. D. Robertson, president of the Plunket Society. Mrs Jackson said it was a great honour to the W.D.F.F. to be asked to open the display, and the various organisations had been happy to help the society. She spoke of the work of the society and referred to the I latest idea of inviting the fathers to 1 help with the children Mrs Robert- I son and her committee deserved praise for what they had done. I

Mrs Robertson expressed thanks to all who had assisted, especially to Mr and Mrs Hurley for the delightful room for the display; to Mr A. C. Seivewright for organising; the various societies which entered tables, and the firms which had sponsored the advertisements. "Many lovely treasures have been loaned for the occasion, and the arrangements of the entries, both classical and novel, are most attractive as are the exquisite cloths on the tables,” said Mrs Robertson. A suitable programme is a good guide to the various entries. Family treasures, such as silver epergnes, crystal, china, dinner sets, candelabras, decanters, and many unusual and exquisite articles grace the tables, which are set as if a person was entertaining famous guests. The table displays include: “Prince Charles of Edinburgh entertains,” "The W.D.F.F. entertains noted early settlers,” “Alice in Wonderland entertains,” “Mr and Mrs Noah entertain,” “Dr. Cockayne of New Zealand entertains,” “Lord Nelson entertains some of his Staff," “Mr Henri Durant (founder of Red Cross) entertains,” “Dinner party in manner of Constance Spry,” “A. St. C. Belcher, Esq., President, the New Zealand Rugby Union, entertains,” “Norman Hartnell entertains,” “Dinner in Victorian Era,” “Royal Academy of Dancing,” “Classical Table," and “Y.W.C.A. Table.” Other exhiolts are: "Pooh Bear’s Picnic,” “Snow White entertains the Seven Dwarfs,” "Lady Ba-den-Powell entertains Guides and Brownies of other lands,” “Goldilocks entertains the Three Bears.” The display will continue today (from 11 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.) and Fri- . day (from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.)
