RABBIT BOARDS TO COLLECT MORE RATES IN THIS DISTRICT
Because of its debit balance of £396 at the bank, the Wanganui Rabbit Board at its monthly meeting decided to appeal to ratepayers to make an early payment of the current year’s lates, the demands for which were sent out on July 17. The meeting was presided over by Mr A. H. Collins. The board has two areas which are badly infested with rabbits and necessitate extra staff. However, results are now being obtained in these areas, it was stated. The board has fixed its rates for the current year at 7-8 d for sheep and 4 3-8 d for cattle, compared with 3-8 d and 1 7-8 d respectively in the 1948-49 season, the last season when a rate was levied. It was reported that the six rabbiters during the past three months slaughtered 12,611 bucks and does. WHANG AEHI BOARD The Whangaehu Rabbit Board yesterday increased its rate from 6d an acre to 7d an acre. The meeting was presided over by Mr D. L. Blyth. It was reported that in five months the board’s rabbiter had slaughtered 1418 bucks, 1126 does and 1160 young.
