RECORD TOTAL OF STATE HOUSES TO BE BUILT THIS YEAR
Government Sets Aside £11,000,000 For 4760 Dwellings
PARLIAMENT BUILDINGS, Last Night (P.A.)—The Government this year intended to spend more than £11,000,000 on State housing, said the Minister of Works, Mr. Goosman, in the House of Representatives tonight, when the Address-in-Reply debate was resumed. The Minister said this expenditure would be a record for the country for any one year.
It was proposed to build 47G0 houses, which would be 600 more than was ever built in a year by ‘the State before. : The Government intended to have as many people as possible owning their own homes, and its policy on housing would be directed to that end. Mr. Goosman said the Government realised the necessity to build State houses for people subject to transfer and people on lower Incomes unable to house themselves. It was the job of any Government to look after those who could not look after themselves, and the present Government intended to do that. The Government had made available a £2OO suspensory loan. Whether that was sufficient he was unable to say, but if it was necessary to extend the amount the matter would be given consideration. The Minister said that there were many people occupying State houses who were well able to build their own homes. Government Members: Hear, hear.
