LANDED COST OF GAS WORKS COAL HAS REACHED £5 10S A TON
The total cost of coal landed at the gasworks was £5 10s a ton, said the engineer and manager, Mr J. W. Atkinson, at the monthly meeting last night of the Wanganui City Council. This position had resulted from the removal of subsidies and was a matter for concern, he said. Mr Atkinson said that the sea freight from Westport or Greymouth to Wanganui was 32s a ton and harbour dues and port handling charges amounted to 5s a ton. The coal cost £3 a ton at the mines, and with all costs and charges added the average per ton landed at the works was £5 10s. The sea freight on coal from the West Cc.ist to Wellington and New Plymouth was cheaper than to Wanganui, but because of an Increase of one-third in rail charges the cost of North Island coal railed to Wanganui was also about £5 10s per ton, said Mr Atkinson. "The landed costs of all coals are Within a few shillings of each other," he added. The Mayor, Hon. W. J. Rogers. M.L.C . said that the Gas Association of New Zealand was very concerned about the increased price of coal.
