FIELD-MARSHAL SLIM ON QUALITIES OF GOOD OFFICERS

CANBERRA, June 21 (Recd. 11.55 pm).—There were no good or bad battalions in the Australian and New Zealand armies, but only good or bad officers, said Field-Marshal Slim in an address to cadets at Duntroon Military College today. Field-Marshal Slim told the cadets that the five essential qualities of a good officer were courage, will power, initiative, knowledge and self-sacrifice. Men of the Australian and New Zealand armies would follow a good officer anywhere. Australian and New Zealand soldiers were no braver than other soldiers of the world, but managed to be brave for a little while longer. “And it’s the last 10 minutes that count,’’ he added.
