Within recent weeks large shipments of apples from the Nelson district have arrived at Wanganui for transport by rail to the Auckland district. From Wanganui the Koutunui will return to Mapua for a further load. The vesel is an infrequent visitor to Wanganui and trades mainly between Wellington, Picton and Nelson. Power Board Loan The Wanganui-Rangitikei Electricpower Board will consider at its next meeting a motion to apply to the Local Government Loans Board for its sanction to the borrowing of a sum of £lOO,OOO for the extension of its reticulation to meet the increasing demand for electricity. The proposed loan will be raised under the Finance Act whereby the board is given authority to do this without taking a poll of the ratepayers unless no fewer than five per cent, of them demand that a poll be taken. Good Power Savings Mild weather and co-operation by consumers has resulted in good power pavings in the Wanganui-Rangitikei Electric-power Board’s area. A board official said last night savings for the first two days of this week have been about 10 per cent., which is the amount required by the emergency cut. Last week’s savings amounted to 9i per cent., and although this was slightly below the North Island average, it was still a good effort. The board will be quite happy as long as the savings are around the 10 per cent, mark, said the official.

This year the new labels are black and white and have to be affixeo to the winscreen by July 1 and any owner driving a car without the new label after June 30 will be liable to prosecution. Fund for New Showgrounds A suggestion that the Wanganui Agricultural and Pastoral Association establish a trust fund for the ultimate purchase of its own showgrounds and buildings, was made by Mr. V. Horrocks at the annual meeting lasi night, and after being adopted was referred to the general committee with power to act. Mr. Horrocks said that if such a move had been made 70 years ago the association could have been a wealthy organisation today. Present members .must look to the future. The association had made rapid progress in the past 25 years and would continue to do so in the next 25 years. By establishing a trust fund it would build up sufficient money each year to enable the ultimate purchase of its own showgrounds and equipment. Mr. Horrocks suggested also that a meeting of all supporters of the association be called. “They may be prepared to make donations to start off the fund,” he added.
