MAN’S BEHAVIOUR IN MARIA PLACE HAS ITS SEQUEL IN COURT
Warning George Henry Smith, cook, aged 32, to keep off the liquor, and that if he again came before the Court for a similar type of offence a serious view would be taken, Mr. S. S. Preston, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, Wanganui, yesterday imposed a fine of £5. Defendant had admitted behaving in a disorderly manner in Maria Place on Saturday evening. Sergeant A. Carlyon, who prosecuted, told the Court that at 6.45 p.m. the police received reports about a man’s behaviour in Maria Place. They found defendant shouting and acting in a strange manner. His right hand was cut and bleeding. Defendant was taken to a taxi office while an ambulance was summoned, but he broke away from there. He was intercepted by a constable, however, and brought back. At the hospital defendant was treated for the cut on his hand, but the hospital authorities told the police that they could not manage him. Defendant was arrested and next morning was calm and normal. Nothing was known against him previously. • In reply to the magistrate, defendant said that he had been drinking heavily. The magistrate: You must leave liquor alone if it affects you like that. You cannot be creating such scenes in public. In reply to the magistrate, Sergeant Carlyon said it appeared that defendant had punched the face of a bowser pump and had broken the glass Defendant, said that he did not think it was necessary to take out a prohibition order. A line of £5 was imposed.
