VICAR OF ST. PETER’S, GONVILLE, REVIEWS THE PARISH ACTIVITIES

Attended by a large number of parishioners, the annual meeting of .St. Peter's Church, Gonville, was held on Wednesday night, the Vicar, the Rev. V. C. Venimore, presiding. Satisfaction was expressed by the vicar at the year by year increase in the Bible class and Sunday School membership, and in the number of Acts of Communion.

“The Bible classes had gained first place in the recent Wanganui interBible class swimming championships. A refresher course for Sunday School teachers had been arranged for June, to be conducted by Sister Helen Sewell, diocesan organiser for Sunday School work. Congratulations were extended to the Ladies’ Guild, which was responsible for an excellent stall at the Christmas fair, to the Mothers’ Union, the Church wardens, and Vestry, and the Church of England Men’s Society. Appreciation was expressed of the work of the choir and of the manner in which a willing team of Church members had in a variety of ways promoted the vigourous and efficient organisation of the parish. The churchwardens’ report, read by Mr. G. Leighton Jones, referred to the progress achieved in the year under review. Special mention was made of the Church of England Boys’ Society, which had more than doubled its membership, and was the first New Zealand branch here. Mr. D. Kennedy had given valuable assistance. Special mention was made of the work of Mr. A. E. Lett, who was absent through sickness, and that of the synodsman, the parish treasurer, and Mr. R. S. R. Barrow, and others who had rendered signal service. “The favourable balance sheet, presented by Mr. A, Sutcliffe, indicated that all current commitments and quotas had been fully met. Speakers made reference to the hospital chaplain, the Rev. A. J. Farnell, who had done much valued work. The election of officers resulted: Vicar’s warden, Mr. T. Rosser; people’s warden, Mr. G. Leighton-Jones; synodsman, Mr. Garland Jones; vestry, Messrs. J. C. Batt, A. G. Horsley, Garland I. Jones, D. Kennedy, J. Dempsey, A. Sutcliffe, E. Tunnicliffe, T. Smith, Dr. W.« A. Priest, Mrs. E. Uttley; honorary auditor, Mr. E. Lind. Appreciation was voiced concerning the duties fulfilled by Miss C. Batten, freewill offering membership secretary. The full panel of sidesmen was re-appointed. Mrs. H. Williams, who is leaving the district after 32 years as an active parishioner, was wished every success for the future. Particular reference was made by the Vicar to Mr. C. V. Lummas, and Mr. E. R. Hodge, honorary architect, for his valued work in regard to St. Luke’s Church.
