AWAPUNI CONTINGENT FOR TOMORROW’S RACES

PALMERSTON N., Last Night (Spec.) About 25 Awapuni horses will race at Woodville and ten at Hawera and the week-end should be profitable for some of them. However, the grass tracks are becoming hard and the final trials this morning were not as serious as they would have been under more favourable con ditions

Imperial was the first horse out, being given a work-out over a mile on the plough. Tremello (G. R. Tattersail) and Lord Holland (W. L. Aitken) ran a mile in 1.49 and were home well in 42 4-5. They are in good order fbr immediate engagements. Offender (D. Harris) and Ngarobi (B. Wood) worked well over a mile in 1.50 and were home a shade faster than Tremello and Lord Holland. Lady Aurora <W. J. Broughton) and Pieck (J. Carter) were together at the end of seven in 1.37 2-5. Wolfetone’ (Mrs. Christmas) and Destination (R. Gibson) were going smoothly at the end of a good five in 1.7.

La Modell (Tattersall) was not a't top over five in 1.9 and could have done better than 41 3-5 for the last three. •

Newel Post (Broughton) and Homespun (L. ,1. Clutterbuck) ran their mile in 1.53 2-5. Coronara (Miss K. Bowman) and Christopher Wren (A. G. Waddell) were timed to run the last six of a mile in 1.26 3-5, the pace being steady throughout. Wembley (Aitken) trailed Tudor Chief to the three and then went past him to run a mile in 1.51. Wembley worked really well and should have a real chance at Woodville. Boyhood (M. Pyne) was being shaken up to stay with Rescind (Clutterbuck) at the end of seven run in 1.34 1-5, the last three in better than 42.

Reflect (Tattersall) sprinted six furlongs from the barrier on the course proper in 1.19 3-5, breaking 40 for the first, three. Other gallops on the course proper included half a mile by Recess (F. Robinson), the last three in 41, .and Philtre went six in 1.25. Battle On (M. Andrews) was schooled over six flights of hurdles, jumping cleanly with plenty of pace on. Quartz (D. Collins) jumped splendidly in a similar trial, as also did Legendre (M. Pyne).
