British-Registered Merchantman Detained

HONGKONG, May 3 (Recd. 8.10 pm).—Two Chinese Nationalist warships intercepted and detained the British - registered Chinese - owned merchantman Singhing in Chinese territorial waters when entering the Amoy on Monday evening. The incident was witnessed from the open sea by a sis’ter-ship, the Cheunghing, which returned to Hongkong today. The Singhing radioed Hongkong for help but the Royal Navy declined to indicate what action was taken. The Singhing was carrying 30 Chinese passengers and a cargo of fertilisers. —Reuter.
