Death By Drowning Was Accidental, States New Plymouth Coroner

NEW PLYMOUTH, Last Night (PA> —A human jawbone washed up near the Mohakatino River mouth on December 19, 1948, was officially declared today not to be remains of Mr Ernest. Weekes, single, a lorry driver employed by the Works Department, who was drowned on October 28, 1948. The coroner, Mr J. Coyle, J.P., sitting at Mokau, found that the drowning was the result of the accidental capsize of a small boat. The inquest was remarkable as It was held without a boay. in the circumstances the proceedings had a special authority issued by the Solici-tor-General, who invoked the powers of section 3 of the Coroners Amendment Act. The reason for the procedure was given as "that the body of Ernest Weekes is lying in a place from which is cannot be recovered.”
