FEDERATION OF LABOUR AIMS AT REDUCTION OF WORKING HOURS
WELLINGTON, Last Night (P.A.) —When the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants asked the Federation of Labour conference today to take steps to win a 35-hour week for all workers, there was a full hour’s discussion on the issue.
The official conference report said a resolution was adopted declaring that the objective of the Federation will be: "Reduction of hours of all workers which is compatible with the highest possible standing of living.’’ A motion in these terms was moved byMr. R. S. Thomas (Printing Trades Union) and seconded by Mr. J. Freeman (Timber Workers' Union). It was carried by 126 votes to 31. The federation will ask the Government to amend the Factories Act to provide for three weeks’ annual holiday instead of the present two.
