CITY RETAILERS TO CLOSE EARLIER TO SAVE ELECTRIC POWER
To assist in the saving of electric power, Wanganui retailers from nex* Monday will open their premises at 8.30 a.m. and close at 5 p.m. A decision to this effect was made at a meeting of about 40 city retailers yesterday morning. Retail houses not represented at the meeting are to be asked to observe these hours until the end of August. The meeting agreed that on Fridays that hours should be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and also carried a recommendation that wherever possible a shutdown tea hour from 5.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. should be instituted. Reference was made to the idle steam generating plant in Taupo Quay and decided to make representations to have this plant put into operation again as soon as possible. A speaker said that the reason why the plant was not used was said to be the high cost of production. “I suggest that now because of the high cost of disruption it should be used again,'’ it was stated.
