WOMAN DIES AS THE RESULT OF BURNS

AUCKLAND, Last Night (P.A.) A woman died as the result of a tiro in a house at 37 Arthur Street, Ponsonby, just after 6.30 this evening. She was Mrs. Lottie Ann Brooks, aged 64, widow. Mrs. Brooks, who was an invalid, had been left resting on a couch in the kitchen. Two men who were passing the house noticed smoke and knocked on the door. A man staying at the house, Mr. John Connell, who was ill in bed. got up and struggled to the door and let them in .The mon telephoned the tire brigade and rushed into the kitchen where they found Mrs. Brooks and moved her outside. An ambulance was summoned but Mrs Brooks was found to be dead. She had suffered severe burns. The fire damaged floors and walls of the kitchen and couch. Some curtains were destroyed. The outbreak was extinguished with first-aid equipment.
