TRAMWAY DELEGATES WERE INSTRUCTED BY UNIONS TO WALKOUT
WELLINGTON, Last Night (PA) The delegates of the New Zealand Tramways Employees’ Union stated Vday that in walking out of the annual conference of the New Zealand Federation of Labour they acted in accordance with an instruction received from their union’s annual conference.
This statement was made in reply to comment by the president of the Wellington branch of the union.
Mr P. A. Hansen, secretary of the New Zealand Tramways Union, on the instruction of tramway delegates to the conference, released today an answer in reply to Mr Amos, the decision of the national council of the union. These were:
“(1) That the union oppose the expulsion of the Waterside Workers’ Union by the national executive of the Federation of Labour and demand that the national executive abide by the constitution.
“(2) That the unconstitutional attitude adopted by the national executive of the Federation of Labour should be opposed, and that our representatives should be instructed to do everything in their power to prevent this unconstitutional action being put into effect. “(3) That our delegates to the conference of the federation be instructed to walk out of that conference should the position, as envisaged, develop at the forthcoming ocnference, and if our delegates, after consultation with kindred organisations, consider there is no other feasible manner in which to register our protest. “These resolutions were adopted unanimously by the union’s national council. Mr Amos, as a member of the conucil, was present when the decisions were made.’’
