NEW PUBLICAN’S LICENCE FOR TAUPO REFUSED
WELLINGTON, Yesterday (PA).— The Licensing Control Commission does not consider there is any justification for granting a new publican’s licence in Taupo, nor that sufficient need has been established to warrant a wholesale licence for that area. Although the evidence indicated there were plans for large-scale development in the Atiamuri area, the commission does not consider the granting of a tourist house or publican’s licence is warranted at. this stage. Giving its decision, the commission stated that, in the course ot pi&’Je sittings at Rotorua in October it hoard evidence to review the distribution of licences in the northern part of the Waimarino licensing district. were three hotels in Taupo and one at Rangataiki, and there was a further hotel at Wairakel which had been brought up to a high standard by the Tourist and Health Resorts Department. The commission had given consideration to the existing hotels, and after careful consideration, and with some hesitation, had decided that it should not cancel any licences. It. made a number of decisions involving rebuilding, recon* struct ion or renovation.
