Injured Boy Brought From Distant Island By Catalina To Fiji
WELLINGTON, Yesterday (PAL— An emergency flight by an R.N.Z.A.F. Catalina based at Lauthala Bay, Fiji, and which involved landing In the open sea is reported in a cable message received today by the R.N.Z.A.F. headquarters at Wellington. Thrown from a horse while riding on the island of Tavenui, some 130 miles from Suva, a seven-year-old European, Spencer Tarte, suffered serious internal injuries. There is no hospital on Taveani and a call was sent to Lauthala Bay base. To use the normal landing area on Tavenui would mean a 12-mile journey over land for the injured boy and the loss of valuable time so the pilot, FlightLieutenant B. J. Oliver, of Whangarei, brought his aircraft down on the open sea, landing oft the island and embarked the boy, his mother and sister. The flight to Lauthala Bay was made in one hour and the boy was transferred next day in a commercial air liner from the Suva hospital to Australia.
