CHRISTMAS RUSH ON RAILWAYS REACHING PEAK PERIOD TODAY

The Christmas rush period on the railways will reach its peak today and tomorrow when all long-distance trains, many of them extras, will be fully taxed in order to meet the abnormal demands caused by the large number of people travelling before the holidays. Judging by reservations and sales of tickets, the Christmas traffic this year is as heavy as last, if not more so, but because of Christmas Day falling on a Sunday is spread over a longer period.

Some industries closed down earlier in the week, others yesterday, and most shops and offices will close today for the long week-end. This means that people have more time in which to reach their destinations before Christmas Day, with a consequent spreading of Christmas travel. Most years, the heaviest traffic is On Christmas Day, with nine or ten express trains running between Wellington and Auckland. Tomorrow, however, there will be only six, indicating that the heaviest traffic is expected tonighF, when 10 express trains, six of them specials, will be running between Wellington and Auckland.

The holiday schedules, however, provide for extra expresses on the Main Trunk till well into the New Year, with Daylight Limiteds running from early in January onward. Though the Chhristmas holiday rush is more staggered, this week has been exceptionally busy from Monday onward. Express trains passing through Marton Junction last night were full, and the expresses between Wellington, Wanganui and New Plymouth were also heavily booked. On the New Plymouth line, these expresses have been running daily since last Monday and will do so till January 16. In addition, a relief express leaves Wanganui for Wellington at 11.15 a.m. today and on January 3 and 7. ,

A relief express from Wellington to Wanganui ran yesterday and is also scheduled for today and tomorrow’.
