HUGHES, A COURAGEOUS RIDER, WINS N.Z. 1000 METRES TIME TRIAL
AUCKLAND, Lust Night (PA)—By an outstanding display ot courageous riding, E. L. G. Hughes, of Auckland, today won the New Zealand 1000 metres time trial cycling at Western Springs Stadium. Hughes won the title by the slim margin of one-tenth of a second from an Auckland junior rider, C. M. Simpson, and he had an advantage of one-fifth of a second over the defending champion, L. Lock, of Canterbury. Hughes’ time was Imin. 17.7 sec.
The particular merit of Hughes’ performance was that he rode wellbandaged from injuries suffered in an accident at the Empire Games trials at Wanganui last. Saturday. The championships will be carried on tomorrow evening and on Saturday. The New Zealand team for the Empire Games will then be chosen. The times In today’s event were: E. L. G.
