NO 35-HOUR WEEK FOR AUSTRALIAN MINERS

SYDNEY, Dec 12 (Recd 8 pm).— The Miners’ Federation claim for a 35-hour week was today refused by the Coal Industry Tribunal, Mr. F. H. Gallagher, who made no reduction in the present 40-hour week. The decision applies to New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Tasmania and West Australia, where the miners obtained a 40-hour week in 1939 when general industry worked for 44 hours. Mr. Gallagher said he believed a reduction would mean a serious loss of coal, that the miners already had attractive conditions and a considerably lower accident rate than in 1939, and that the International Labour Organisation, which the miners claimed had enunciated the principle of a shorter working week for miners, had in reality proposed a six day week of 46i hours for miners
