R.N.Z.A.F. EFFORT TO SAVE LIFE OF MINISTER OF FINANCE IN TONGA

WELLINGTON, Last Night (PA).— A bid to save the life of the Tongan Finance Minister, Mr. H. E. Nicolson, a New Zealander, was made by the Royal New Zealand Air Force when a call for aid was received by No. 5 Squadron (Sauthala Bay) from the Governor of Fiji. A Catalina flying-boat, captained by a Wairarapa pilot, Flight-Lieutenant R. E. Weston, was despatched to Nukualofa and Mr. Nicolson, accrl.ipanied by his wife, was rushed to Suva. In spite of prompt medical attention Mr. Nicolson died two days later, a fortnight after he first became 111. Mr. Nicolson, who was born in Thames, entered the service of the Tongan Government in December, 1925. As Finance Minister to the Queen of Tonga, he was highly respected for his ability and Integrity. He was 51 years of age.
