Allegations Of Milk Vendors “Pirating” Trade

Allegations that milk vendors had been "pirating” dairy trade registered direct with the Wanganui Milk Treatment Corporation and supplying raw milk to dairies contrary to the corporation’s best interests were made yesterday in a report tabled by the manager of the Wanganui East treating plant, Mr. S. V. Howells It was not the corporation’s policy to supply raw milk to dairies and the corporation was losing trade through this practice by vendors, the report added. He suggested that a conference between the directors and the vendors’ association be held with a view to reaching an understanding over the wholesale supply. An indication that there was nothing in current regulations to uphold the corporation’s rule that raw milk must not be supplied to dairies was given by Mr. D. R. Robbins. Vendors’ interests had discussed the matter with the city’ health inspector, Mr. W. S. Steele, and he had pointed out that there was nothing in the regulations to stop the sale of raw milk. Dairies had demanded raw milk from vendors and there appeared to be no authority yet for them to refuse to distribute raw supplies, he said. It was decided to leave the matters to n conference of all milk supply interests which will be called early next month by the Wanganui City Council as local milk authority.
