Red Ruler Appears Likely To Prove Useful When He Competes In Open Company

(By

“KESTREL”

When the Wanganui-owned and trained Bed Ruler got his head in front of Royal Drake in the last few strides of the A. AV. Budge Memorial Hack at Stratford last Saturday he raised his stake-winnings to £555. As a result he will have to do his future racing- in open company.

However, the Broieiort gelding will be able to run out his hack nominations, and it is significant that he has been entered for the Kongo! ea Hack Handicap on the second day of the Feilding meeting. That race is run over ten furlongs, and it has been noted that Red Ruler appreciates distance racing rather than sprinting. Only a three-year-old, Red Ruler should have a useful career ahead of him for Messrs E. A. Carveil and C. H. Penn, who purchased him at the Trentham yearling sales in January of last year. He cost l hem 250gns and has won a total of 1665 in stakes in 19 starts, his record comprising two wins, a second, two thirds and a fourth. He is trained at Wanganui by E. A. Carveil. As a two-year-old Red Ruler was saddled up on 12 occasions. At his fourth start he was third to Recess and Maranoa in the Nursery Handicap at Woodville. Two starts later he was fourth in the Himatangi Handicap at Awapuni to His Nibs, Marloch and Pavia. The third occasion on which he earned place money was when he finished third to Oxford Blue and Hit or Miss in the Midhirst Juvenile at Stratford. That, he had quality is evident from the calibre of the opposition. After being twice unplaced this season Red Ruler was tried out over the mile of the Champion Hack Handicap at Masterton in October, and he surprised form followers to return a handsome dividend, earning £245 in stakes. He appeared a trifle unlucky to be beaten into second place by Arvadale in the second division of the Parewanui Hack Handicap at Bulls. His bracketed stablemate, Barlous, had earlier overcome difficulties to win the first division. Stratford marked the next appearance of Red Ruler, and it was expected that he would be one of the favourites following his promising form earlier. Much to the surprise of his connections, a double-figure dividend accompanied his win in the Budge Memorial Hack. Red Ruler carried 8.10 and after being well back half a mile from home he brushed with a determined, well-timed run to snatch a narrow but decisive victory. On that display he must be hard to beat in similar company, and it should certainly not be difficult to place him in provincial handicaps later on, when he should appreciate the lighter scale of weights. Red Ruler was bred at the Grange Stud and is by Broiefort from Phaldove, by Phaleron Bay from Columba by Chief Ruler from Dovelet. Dovelet was also dam of Eaglet, winner of the Wanganui anu Great Northern Guineas and the Waikato Cup, and of Mother Superior, who won the A.R.C. Welcome Stakes and the Great Northern Foal Stakes. Red Ruler has good credentials on both sides of his pedigree, and if his owners elect to put him to the jumping game later in his career he may prove just ai in that branch as many others of Broiefort’s progeny.
