TWO DISTRICTS HAVE PLANS WELL ADVANCED FOR WAR MEMORIALS
Two small districts in the Wanganui county are likely to give the city of Wanganui a lead in providing memorials to those who lost their lives in World War 11. They are Upokongaro, with an estimated district population of 800, and Mangamahu, with a population of about 400, and both districts have plans for community centre halls on which the Government has promised a subsidy of £1 for £l. Th e residents of Mangamahu have raised £2040 toward the cost of the hall .which will replace the existing hall owned by the Wanganui County Council, which is between 60 and 70 years of age and was formerly the offices of the old Mangamahu Road Board. An application for the Government subsidy has already been forwarded by the Wanganui County Council to the Department of Internal Affairs, together with a copy of the plan of the proposed hall, which is to be known as the Mangamahu Community Centre War Memorial. A roll of honour will be provided in the hall. Plans for the reconstruction of the Upokongaro Hall to provide a community centre war memorial for the Makirikiri district are now almost complete and when they are approved by the Wanganui County Council an application for a subsidy will be made. The settlers of the district have already raised approximately £1750 toward th e cost. In both cases the community centres will provide for the entertainment, sporting and cultural needs of the people of the district.
