GENERAL NEWS

Fordell Station Road. Advice that the gorse on the Fordell Station Road had been cleared and that in future the department would accept no responsibility for keeping the area clear was received from the district representative of the Ministry of Works at yesterday's meeting of the Wanganui County Council. The council will now accept responsibility for the maintenance ot the road. Tram Oil Rails. A city-bound Aramoho tram left the lines in Glasgow Street on Tuesday night and made an unexpected turn into Keith Street. The tram was slowing down for passengers when the derailment occurred. Passengers were transhipped shortly after the derailment, but later passengers were delayed while the tram was being placed back on the lines. This task took almost an hour and a-half. Milk Treatment Directors. The appointment of the directors of the Wanganui Milk Treatment Corporation is contained in the latest issue of the New Zealand Gazette. They are the Hon. W. J. Rogers (Government), Messrs T. N. Dickson, W. S. N. Rennie (consumers), J. P. Wells, R. Rowan (producers), D. R. Robbins (vendors) and J. H. S. McKee (pro ducer-vendors). Their term of office is three years from November 1, 1949. Sessions Conclude. The fourth and last quarterly sessions for 1949 of the Supreme Court, Wanganui, which opened before Mr. Justice Hay on October 31, concluded yesterday when His Honour dealt with remaining divorce and miscellaneous matters. During the past two years or so the Wanganui sessions have extended over the full period of two weeks, but on this occasion were the lightest for many months. This was due to a small criminal calendar and the absence of civil cases before the Judge alone, or a jury. The most protracted matter during the present sessions was a defended petition for divorce which occupied two days, otherwise all the cases dealt with were comparatively short.

Food For Britain. “As most of our beneficiaries are among those who feel most severely the limitations of food forced on the inhabitants of Great Britain, the .rustees have for some years been forwarding specially addressed and selected parcels of food each quarter to each of our beneficiaries in Great Britain, and we are forwarding 150 221 b. parcels to these homes every three months,” states the annual report of the New Zealand Sheepowners’ Acknowledgment of Debt to British Seamen Fund. “This activity will be continued for as long as the need exists, and the grateful letters from the recipients emphasise their appreciation,” adds the report.

Airport Highway. Plans have been completed for the reconstruction of the Wanganui Airport highway and proposals for the work will be submitted to the Main Highways Board immediately, stated the engineer (Mr. R. R. Dawson) at yesterday’s meeting of the Wanganui County Council. Cr. L. A. Mackintosh said he was concerned at the slow progress with the provision of street lights at Putiki and a footpath which had been promised to the settlers. The clerk said the delay over the lights was due to shortage of equipment. The engineer said he hoped to complete the footpath within a week. He said that the Airport highway could not be sealed this season as it would have to consolidate after it had been reconstructed.
