Wanganui Women’s Club Rose Show

A profusion of beautiful roses and other summer blooms were displayed in the reception room of the Wanganui Women's Club yesterday afternoon when the Garden Circle, with Mrs A. R. Gower as convener, held its rose show. Artistry and skill in arrangement and blending of colours were seen in the decorative section, this comprising morning tray, tm.y vases of flowers, low bowls for dinner table decoration, tall and low vases, also baskets. The entries in the decorative class were judged by popular vote and must have been a problem to the members as many of the exhibits had exquisite flowers, beautifully arranged and blended. Ths loses and other blooms in the cut flowers section also had crowds of admirers. Mr Benefield, the judge, made the following awards:— Single roses, Mrs A. R. Gower: one rose, art shade, Mrs O. B. Hawken (Whangaehu) 1, Miss Hatrick 2; one rose, red shade, Mrs A. H. Boyes 1, Mrs C. P. Brown 2; one rose, pink, Mrs Hawken 1, Mrs P. H. Hartland 2; one rose, white, yellow or cream, Mrs Hawken 1 and 2; one cluster of roses, Mrs F. Cullen 1, Mrs Hartland 2; three full-blown roses, Mrs C. P. Brown 1, Mrs Gower 2; one rose for perfume, Mrs F. A. Bates 1, Mrs Stevens 2; vase of sweet peas, Mrs Bates 1, Mrs G. F. Lomas 2; three spikes bearded iris, Mrs N. R. Bain 1, Mrs Hawken 2; six blooms Iceland poppies Mrs Scott Wilson 1, Mrs S. Davis 2; three gerberas, Mrs Bayly 1, Miss Cummins 2; three violas or pansies, Mrs C. P. Brown; one head rhododendron, Mrs S. Davis 1, Mrs Bayly 2; three varieties shrubs, Mrs Bayly 1, Mrs Gower 2; three spikes delphiniums, Mrs C. P. Brown; three spikes stocks, Mrs Bayly; tnree carnations, Mrs J. C. Small 1, Mrs T. L. Sperring 2; vase of aquilegias, Mrs Small 1, Mrs Stevens 2; bowl of pinks, Mrs Gower 1, Mrs C. P. Brown 2; any other flower, Mrs Gower 1, Mrs Stevens 2; novelty, Mrs S. H. Birch; gaillardia, Mrs Lomas 1, Mrs Small 2. The winners in the decorative section (judged by popular vote) were: Low bowl, suitable for dining table, Mrs W. E. Robbie; bowl of roses, Mrs T. L. Sperring; large bowl of flowers, Mrs W. E. Robbie; rail vase of flowers Mrs Hartland; basket of flowers, Mrs Sperring; tiny receptacle suitable for breakfast tray, Mrs Small.
