WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

Turakina The 18th birthday meeting of the Turakina branch of the W.I. was held in the Turakina Hall on October 20. Mrs Perry opened the meeting with the W.I. song and the National Anthem, both of which were accompanied on the pianoforte by Mrs Johnston, Sen. A most enjoyable programme was presented, which included humorous recitations by Mrs Sanson, of Bulls; two songs by Mrs Bell, of Whangaehu, and pianoforte solos by Mrs F. Johnston, Turakina. Members of the drama circle, Mesdames Duncan, Flyger, Hirst, Kiernan and Sinclair, presented an amusing playette, and Mrs Majoi’ gave a humorous monologue. All wno took part in the programme were presented with shoulder sprays, and a hearty vote of thanks was passed to them. Afternoon tea was served and the candles, on the birthday cake made by Mrs Lumsden and beautifully iced by Mrs Poppe in the gold and green of the branch colours, were lit by the visiting ex-members, Mesdames Shaw, Smith, Gabites, Govenlock, Black and Dowling. Mrs King, the oldest member of the Turakina branch, blew the candles out, and Mrs Tipper, president of the federation, cut the cake. Visiting members from the following groups did much to add to the success of the afternoon: Bulls W.1., Marton Junction W.1., Wanganui W.D.F.F., Turakina W.D.F.F., Fordell W.1., Kaitoke W.1., Aramoho W.1,, Westbourne W.1., Mosston W.I. The cake competition was won by Bob Major; chocolates, Mr G. Keith; mystery parcel, Mrs Black. Competition results: Best bloom, Mrs Major 1, Mrs Templeton 2, Mrs Perry 3; bowl of flowers, Mrs Hirst 1. Mrs Major 2, Mrs Perry 3; decorated egg, Mrs Card 1, Mrs Sinclair 2, Mrs Perry 3. The silver cup awarded each year for the points prize, premier bloom, was won for the fourth consecutive time by Mrs Major, and five times in all. Rapanui Members’ Day was observed when the Rapanui W.I. ’held its October meeting. Mrs. Cooper was in the chair and extended a warm welcome to all visitors and members. A moment's silence was observed as a mark of respect to the late Mrs. Fyfe, who was an institute member. The correspondence included eight letters from recipients of food parcels; and it was reported that another dozen parcels had been sent to Britain. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr. and Mrs. Stewart, who sponsored a successful dance in aid of Rapanui W.I. food parcels. Mrs. Cooper gave a comprehensive report of the halfyearly council meeting, which was held at Kai Iwi. The social programme included a violin solo by Miss B. Anderson, a violin duet by Mrs. Trussell and Miss Anderson, and vocal solos by Miss L. Ross. Following afternoon tea, Mrs. Garner gave a most interesting demonstration on soft-toy making, and flower sprays made with wire and stranded cotton. Articles she displayed were much admired, and the demonstration was closely followed. Results of the Point’s Competitions were as follows: —Peg bag, Mrs. Sharpe 1, Mesdames Russell and Abercrombie 2 equal. Best bloom, Mrs. Burnet 1, Miss Cooper 2, Mrs. Sharpe 3. A social competition arranged by Mrs. Stewart, was won by Mrs. Garner. Miss Wilson passed a vote of thanks, and the afternoon concluded with the National Anthem Waverley At the October meeting of the Waverley Women’s Institute, Mrs. Stinson, the president, welcomed a very good attendance of members, including two new members. Two members received gifts from the birthday box, while Mrs. McGorrery won the wandering shilling. A full report was given by Mrs. Atkinson, the delegate to the recent half-yearly council meeting. A competition for soft toys and scrap-books was held, the entries, all made in this section, are to be forwarded to the leper children. A demonstration was given on the uses of the various attachments of the Singer sewing machine, this being very much appreciated. The 'demonstrator was warmly applauded a nd thanked. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Car roll, Smith and Miss D. Clover. Competitions were judged by Mesdames Yeoman and C. How and awards were as follow:—Collection of spring flowers, Miss D. Clover 1, Mrs. Lupton 2, Mrs. Milne 3. One tulip, Mrs. Lupton 1, Mrs. Slater 2, Miss A. Davis 3. Scrap book. Mrs. Stinson 1, Mrs. Watty 2, Mrs. Maine 3. Soft toy. Mrs. Lupton 1, Mrs. Milne 2, Mrs. Howie 3. Shortbread, Mrs. Lupton 1, Mrs. Cope-1 land 2, Mrs. Lee 3.
