Gifts For Catholic Carnival Queen And Princesses

In the presence of a large audience, the final Coronation ceremony which marked the close of the recent Wanganui Catholic Queen Carnival, was held in the Opera House on Tuesday night. At the conclusion of the ceremony presentations were made to the Queen of the Carnival, Miss Mary O'Leary and the four princesses, by the Mayor (Hon. W. J. Rogers) M.L.C.,.

Miss O’Leary was presented with a silver tea service and tray, Miss Evka Vodanovich, with a cameo necklace and powder compact, Miss Joan Manson with a dressing table set, Miss Rosemary Charney with a clock and Miss Joyce Fore with a dressing table set and fountain pen. The Mayor congratulated Miss O’Leary on being elected Queen of the Carnival, and the other princesses, whose co-operation had made the contest possible. He said the carnival organisers had shown good team work and good organisation had resulted in a splendid financial success. Mr Rogers also paid tribute to Mrs. H. M. Armitage, who had staged the coronation spectacle, and, for the committee, presented her with a bouquet (n acknowledgement of her work. Mr J. J. McCulloch, chairman of the carnival executive, thanked Mrs. Armitage and the candidates who had taken part in the contest and all those who had assisted in the successful effort. He made mention of the valuable assistance given by the Garrison Band, under its conductor, Mr. R. Francis.

During the evening the following were Knighted by the Lord High Chancellor, Mr. N. Owen, for services given the carnival and Messrs. J. J. McCulloch, J. McDonald, C. Chainey, J. Vondanovich, R. Francis, Ron McDonald and Mesdames H. Davey, F. McKessar, J. P. Lennon, M. McCarthy, Misses M. Kennedy, M. Tuffin, L. Roach and A. Wood. The singing of Miss Cynthia Lawson (Wellington) was again a feature of the evening. During the coronation ceremony she sang impressively “My Beautiful Lady." Mr. and Mrs. Alan Brown, Miss Ailsa Tizard and Janis Mosen were among those who contributed items on the final night's programme.
