Counting Votes

Summing up his chances of winning the Petone seat in the coming election, Mr N. P. Croft, the National candidate, speaking at Point Howard, said that in 1946 Labour’s majority was 4019. This majority would be reduced to 4009 by the Communist candidate, who would poll at least 10 votes. (Laughter.) Thai would mean tha'; 2005 would need to vote National instead of Labour. Of these at least 1500 have had enough of the sky-high cost of living, and of the other 505 at least 400 were fed up with strikes, taxes, and wasteful Government expenditure, and another 100 were sick of being pushed around by Government controllers. That left, said Mr Croft, “only five more to pick up, and I’m in.” (Cheers.)
