ENGINEER REPORTS ON WORK ON ROADS IN RANGITIKEI COUNTY

MARTON, Last Night (S.R.). —Reporting on road works carried out in the Rangitikei County during October, th e engineer, Mr. H. Murray Reid, stated that patching and sealing had been done on the Marton-Curl’s Bridge main highway and arrangements made to reform and metal several other weak portions of the road. General surface work had been carried out on other roads in the Rangitoto Riding. The chairman, Cr. K. W. Dalrymple, presided, and also in attendance were Crs. A. S. Coleman, O. B. Hawken, H. G. Stewart, J. R. L. Hammond, T. C. Chisholm, A. D. Mair, J. M. B. Collier, V. Smith and G. B. Chrystall, and the county clerk (Mr. F. L. Nicol) and the engineer. Satisfactory progress had been made with the clearing of Whangaehu drains (Otakapu Riding) a n d in the Whangaehu Riding the Marton gang had cleared watertables on the Makahau Road, the engineer stated. The contractor had started delivering metal for this x’oad. Similar work had been don e on Taurini Road, several washouts repaired and three new culverts placed. Good progress had been made with metalling the Turakin a Valley Road. On other roads in the riding general surface work had been carried out by surfacemen and grader. In the Porewa Riding the Tutaenui and Galpin’s Roads had been metalled by contractor and watertables cleared on Warren’s Road. Surfacing and grading operations had also been carried out by county workmen on other roads in the riding. The bridge gang was carrying out major repairs to the Onepuhi Bridge (Rangitira Riding). A large stump was removed from the Onepuhi Road and a new culvert placed on Putorini Road.

Overhanging willows were removed from the Ironworks Road (Otairi Road) and notices limiting traffic weights placed on several bridges in this riding. The Huntervill e gang had cleared small slips from the Vinegar Hill main highway and the same gang had been employed in clearing slips and watertables from th e Turakii/? Valley Road. Metal had been delivered and spread on the Te Kumu Road. Thee lay portion of Makopour Road (Awarua Riding) had been widened where necessary, and the road trimmed with the pull-grader. In the Te Kapua Riding, a power grader had trimmed the Pohonui, Okaka and Ta hete Roads and at present was on the Turakina Valley Road, near Siberia. Th e engineer reported also on work carried out on roads in the Ruanui, Awarua and Erewhon Ridings.
