Wanganui Y.W.C.A. Is To Become Separate Body

The Wanganui Y.W.C.A. is to become a separate institution, as from March 1 next and will, as from then not be combined with the Wanganui Y.M.C.A., to which it has been linked since 1939. Notice oft his decision to maintain a separate existence was given at a meeting in the Y.W.C.A. lounge on Tuesday night, convened by • the association and attended by representatives of women’s organisations and members. A detailed report of the activities of the Y.W.C.A. in Wanganui during the 10. years of its existence was given by Mrs R. N. Wilson, president of the women’s committee. In answer to several questions, she explained that the separation move had not been sought by the Y.W.C.A., but was the result of the difficulty of meeting the combined associations’ budget. Good wishes from the national board in Wellington were expressed by Miss A. Louise Burton, national general secretary of the Y.W.C.A. of New Zealand, who also addressed the meeting. She reviewed the wider aspects of Y.W.C.A. work and the need there was today for its service to youth.

Miss H. Iris Crooke, of Marton, Director-General of the New Zealand Red Cross Voluntary Aid Division, who has been addressing meetings in Wanganui and other parts of New Zealand in regard to a conference of the Society held at Stockholm, which she attended. Miss Crooke plans to relinquish her post in March next, and the Red Cross Society is hopeful that her successor will take up her duties as soon as possible. It is hoped that a suitable person in the nursing profession, with the requisite qualifications, will come forward to take the office in a voluntary capacity, as has been so ably done by Miss Crooke.
