Baptist Assembly Is Opened
AUCKLAND, Last Night (PA>. The 67th. annual assembly of the Baptist Union of New Zealand and the New Zealand Baptist MissionarySociety was officially opened in the Tabernacle tonight. Addresses of welcome were given by the deputyMayor (Mr. J. L. Coakley), the Rev. J. Douglas Smith, president of the Auckland branch of the National Council of Churches, and Mr. A. T. Down, secretary of the Auckland Assembly Committee. Mr. Coakley’ said the Baptist churches displayed a heartening virility which indicated a large measure of divine blessing on their work. The Rev. M. Smith said that Christianity was facing forces in the world today that were a great menace to it. Unless Christianity became more effective, a dark day would surely come for the Church. Union was necesary. Replies on behalf of the delegates were made by Mr. W. Carey (Wellington) and the Rev. A. Fear (Greymouth). A service was held following the welcome tea and the newly appointed president, the Rev. E. W. Batts, of Dunedin, was introduced by the retiring president, Mr. H- W. Milaer, of Wellington.
