BRITISH EUROPEAN AIRWAYS SHOWS PROFIT FOR FIRST QUARTER
LONDON, Nov. 2 (Reed. 9 pm).— British European Airways, one of Britain’s two nationalised airlines, has announced a profit for the three months ended September 30. Hitherto the line has been run at a loss. Lord Douglas, British European Airways’ chairman, said the profit amounted to 6s 8d for every passenger carried or £2 9s per aircraft flying hour, compared with a loss of £lO sterling per flying hour in the same period of 1948. The results were achieved after the staff had been cut by 1050. The “Daily Express’ says that the incentive bonus scheme was mainly responsible for the profit. The scheme has increased flying time by 25 per cent., with only 75 per cent, of the manpower.—Special N.Z.P.A. Correspondent.
