SPORTING ACTIVITIES FOR LABOUR WEEK-END
A varied programme of sporting activities will be held in Wanganui during the Labour week-end holiday period . The majority of summer sporting enthusiasts will take the opportunity of obtaining practice in preparation for the coming season, and it is hoped that this Labour Day week-end will not be marred by the usual inclement weather. As part of the anual reunion festivities of the past students of the Wanganui Technical College cricket matches will be played and a tennistournament will be held. On Saturday and Monday cricket matches will take place between teams representing the college and the old boys. At least 50 entries are expected for the tennis tourney, which will be held on Saturday and Monday. On Monday rowing events will take place between college and old boys’ crews. The first important rowing contest of the season will be staged on Saturday afternoon when the secondary schools’ eight-oar rowing race for the Maadi Cup will be held on the Aramoho course commencing at 3.30 p.m. The competing crews are: Wanganui Technical College, Wanganui Collegiate School, Mt. Albert Grammar, Sacred Heart College and Seddon Memorial Technical College. Leading motor-cycle riders from all parts of the country will compete in the road race over the Okoia-Mata-rawa Valley circuit on Saturday. The race, which is being conducted by the Wanganui Motor .Racing Club, will probably be the biggest of its kind to be held in the Dominion. Good entries have been received for the Castlecliff Golf Club’s annual Labour week-end championship tournament. Among the competitors is A. R. Kitto who recently won the Wanganui district championship. Play will commence on Saturday and the finals will be played on Monday. Match play will be provided for all competitors throughout the tourney. The Wanganui Sailing Club will commence the new season on Saturday. As such a big programme is set down for the coming season, trophy racing will begin immediately. The Wanganui Lawn Tennis Club will be officially opened on Saturday. Other clubs are expected to be well patronised during the week-end. All day tournaments will be conducted by a number of the bowling clubs on Monday. Racing and trotting enthusiasts will be well catered for, as meetings will be held throughout the country. A number of Wanganui people will be visiting Trentham on Saturday, when the feature event will be the Wellington Guineas, which has attracted New Zealand's leading three-year-olds. On Moday the Waverley Racing Club will stage a meeting on the Waverley racecourse.
