GENERAL NEWS
The Lambing Season. Lambs are becoming plentiful throughout the Wanganui district, particularly along the coastal belt. So far the weather has been mild for the ewes and lambs in spite of the rain and conditions generally have been regarded as satisfactory. Lambing has also commenced in some portions of the back country. Salvation Army Anniversary. A successful 65th anniversary celebration of the establishment of the Wanganui Salvation Army Corps was held during the week-end. Feature of the celebration was the displays of gymnastics, singing, and tableaux by the boys of the Eltham Boys’ Home. Large attendances were present at the displays. The church services during the week-end were conducted by Mayor Argyle, of Eltham. Shipment of Cement. Of the shipment of 580 tons of Tarakohe cement being discharged at Wanganui by the coastal motor ship Port Waikato, some 280 tons will be sent to Palmerston North. The allocation of 300 tons to Wanganui will not go far among contractors, the demand for cement in the city being very heavy at present. Merchants state that it would tak e a big shipment to cope with orders now on hand. New Rose Garden. A working bee of 10 members of the Wanganui Rose Society was busily engaged on Saturday morning preparing an area of land on Durie Hill for the planting of roses as a part of the proposed civic rose garden. Th e first roses will be planted next Wednesday, which is Arbor Day, by the chairman of the Wanganui City Council’s Reserves Committee, Mr. R. N. Wilson. Already the society has received sufficient donations of roses and money to account for about 200 plantings the number which the area prepared will accommodate. Aerodrome Unserviceable. The Wanganui Airpoit was placed unserviceable on Saturday and yesterday as a result of the heavy fall of rain on Friday afternoon and night. The surface of the landing field was covered with extensive areas of water and the ground was verysoft. As a result of the decision to place the field unserviceable ,no weekend flying was carried out by members of the Wanganui Aero Club. The heavy rainfall experienced in the district this winter has placed a severe strain on the aerodrome drains and on one other occasion the field was placed unserviceable, a decision which has been taken only on a few occasions since the aerodrome has been in use.
