RECORD PAYOUTS IN U.S.A. OF UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE BENEFITS

WASHINGTON, July 24.—Unemployment insurance payments in America reached a record monthly level of 154,696,000 dollars in June, announced the Bureau of Employment Security.

Mr. Robert C. Goodwin, director, said the largest previous total for any one month in the history of the unemployment insurance law was 152,096,345 dollars last March. Nearly 100,000 more jobless workers received unemployment benefits each week during June than in May. The agency said that during the first six months of 1949 the total unemployment benefit payments were about 8,000,000,000 dollars. This represented almost twice the amount paid out during the first six months of 1948.
