WELLINGTON, Last Night (P.A.) —lt took Don Mullett (Wellington), exactly 2min. 28sec to remain the professional heavyweight boxing championship of New Zealand at the Town Hall tonight In that period he knocked Tommy Downes (Palmerston North) down five times. It was an unequal contest, Mullett scaling 14st. 81bs„ to his opponent’s 12st. 9lbs., and at 6ft. 26in. he also had an advantage in height of 2iin. Few in the large crowd were pre* pared for the short and dramatic ending to the bout scheduled for 15 rounds. When the pair entered the ring Mullett looked something like, lhe boxer who first won the professional heavyweight championship of New Zealand by knocking out Maurice Strickland at Athletic Park, Wellington, on Boxing Day. 1942. When the opening gong sounded; Mullett walked coolly up to Downs and dropped him for the count of six with a left hook to the head, Rising somewhat groggily, Downes attempted to fight back but was put down again for the count of nine with a short right to the head .Mullett continued to do as he liked with the Palmerston North man. who is better known as a cricketer than a boxer. Coolly measuring his distance Mullett in quick succession sent Downes Io the mat for counts of five and eight ind when he knocked him down for the fifth time referee Phin Stone stopped the unequal contest and hoisted Mullett’s right hand in token of victory.
