INTELLECTUAL AND PRACTICAL PEOPLE NEEDED IN THE WORLD
“I believe that for the survived of cur Western civilisation a numoer of intellectual people are needed, and, as a balance, a great number of practical people are needed,” said Mr R. W. Burchfield, Rhodes Scholar, when addressing pupils at the farewell given in bis honour at the Wanganui Technical College yesterday. “Ycu will receive practical training here, but while a practical vocation is necessary, I believe that if we loose the balance between the two there is a danger that our way of life will not survive,” he added. “I am going to England because I will be nearer to the nest minds in Europe. Also I want to see a new group of people and to live in a new way of life. In addition, there will be a host of literary associations ana I will be able- to study manuscripts, folios and ancient papers. This will seem dull to you, but it will help to maintain the balance between the practical and intellectual.” He knew that he was only a small drop in the ocean, but he pointed out that these small drops scon grew into something’ big. He hoped to return to Wanganui some day and renew former associations.
