Poor Salaries In N.Z. For Superintendents Of Hospitals

PARLIAMENT BLDGS., July 21. At question time in the House’of Representatives today, Mr. J. K. McAlpine (Opp. Selwyn), gave notice to ask the Minister of Health what steps she intends taking to cope with the problem of the loss ol highly qualified medical men who are leaving the hospital service because the remuneration is inadequate. Mr. McAlpin e said when the medical superintendent of the Buller Hospital resigned recently, Mr. W. H. Mclntyre, a member of the local hospital board, said the reason was that the Health Department would not pay sufficient salary. The acting superintendent of the Timaru Hospital, who had resigned only three years after his arrival from England, had said his resignation was largely due to his conviction that the present regulations were not intended to provide adequate attractions for anyone contemplating a fulltime career in the hospital service.
